Well-Child Visits: Why They Matter and How Often Your Child Needs One
Well-child visits — also called wellness exams, preventive checkups, or physicals — are the cornerstone of pediatric health care. They’re not just for when something is obviously wrong. Their entire purpose is to catch problems early, support healthy development, and give you a reliable time to ask questions and get expert guidance.

What Happens at a Well-Child Visit?
A comprehensive well-child visit typically includes:
- Physical examination — height, weight, BMI percentile, head circumference (in infants), blood pressure, vision, and hearing
- Developmental screening — age-appropriate assessment of motor skills, language, and cognitive and social development
- Behavioral and mental health screening — checks for anxiety, depression, ADHD, and social-emotional development
- Immunizations — vaccines according to the CDC and AAP recommended schedule
- Anticipatory guidance — practical advice for parents on nutrition, sleep, safety, screen time, and what to expect in the coming months
- Dedicated Q&A time — the visit is yours; bring your list of questions
Well-Child Visit Schedule: From Birth Through Adolescence
Infancy (0–12 months)
Visits at: 3-5 days after birth (or within 48 hours of early discharge), 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months. This is the most visit-intensive period because growth and development are happening so rapidly.
Toddler and Preschool (1–5 years)
Visits at: 15 months, 18 months, 24 months, 30 months, then annually starting at age 3. Language milestones, behavioral development, and readiness for school are major focal points during these visits.
School Age (6–12 years)
Annual visits. Even if your child seems perfectly healthy, these visits catch vision changes, blood pressure issues, early signs of anemia, developmental concerns, and emerging mental health needs before they become bigger problems.
Adolescence (13–18 years)
Annual visits. These cover puberty progression, sexual and reproductive health, mental health screening, substance use assessment, sleep, and nutrition. Many teens open up more to a trusted provider than they do at home — this is valuable time.
Why Annual Visits Matter Even for Healthy Children
A surprising number of health issues have no symptoms in their early stages: high blood pressure, anemia, vision changes, and early-onset anxiety and depression among them. Annual well-child visits provide a systematic way to catch these conditions before they cause real harm.
Beyond medical screening, well-child visits keep your child’s vaccination record current — one of the most effective public health tools available for preventing serious illness in children and communities.
