Why Your Child Needs a Sports Physical (and When to Schedule)

Your child has been looking forward to tryouts all season. Scheduling a pediatric appointment might be the last thing on your mind — but a sports physical is far more than a formality. It’s a critical safeguard that protects young athletes from conditions that can turn a great season into a medical emergency.

What Is a Sports Physical (Pre-Participation Exam)?

A sports physical — officially called a Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation (PPE) — is a targeted medical evaluation focused specifically on whether your child is safe to participate in organized sports. It’s distinct from a well-child visit, which covers overall health and development more broadly. Most schools, athletic leagues, and youth sports organizations require a current sports physical before the season begins.

Why Sports Physicals Matter

The primary purpose is to identify conditions that could put your child at risk during vigorous physical activity. Some of these — including undiagnosed heart conditions, exercise-induced asthma, and musculoskeletal vulnerabilities — may show no obvious symptoms, even in an active, apparently healthy child.

A sports physical specifically evaluates:

  • Heart and lung function — including screening for conditions that raise the risk of sudden cardiac events during exertion
  • Blood pressure and resting pulse
  • Vision
  • Musculoskeletal health — flexibility, prior injuries, joint stability
  • Medical history — previous concussions, known asthma, diabetes, or other conditions that affect safe participation
  • Mental health and social well-being, which affects performance and safety

When Should You Schedule?

The ideal window is 4-6 weeks before the start of the season or tryouts. This allows enough time to follow up on any findings before a clearance decision is needed. Waiting until the day before tryouts risks your child missing early practice if a concern requires further evaluation.

Many families combine the sports physical with the annual well-child visit, which is an efficient approach. If your child’s annual physical is current, a focused sports physical can often be scheduled as a shorter appointment. Call our office for availability.
