I Just Found Out I’m Pregnant: How Can I Prepare for My Baby’s Future Care?

Congratulations! Once the initial excitement settles, parents-to-be quickly realize there’s a lot to organize. Choosing a pediatrician isn’t just something to think about in the third trimester — and getting a head start makes everything easier once baby arrives.

Step 1: Research Pediatric Practices in Your Area

Start by looking for board-certified pediatricians close to your home and your likely delivery hospital. Check that the practice is accepting new patients, accepts your insurance, and has office hours that work for your schedule. Read reviews, but look for patterns rather than reacting to any single comment.

Step 2: Schedule a Prenatal Meet & Greet

Most pediatric practices offer prenatal consultations — a chance to meet the team, ask questions, and evaluate the fit before you’re committed. This visit is especially valuable because you can assess the practice’s communication style, their approach to feeding and vaccines, and how they handle after-hours concerns.
Ideal timing is 28-36 weeks, but we welcome expectant parents at any stage of pregnancy.

Step 3: Understand the Early Visit Schedule

Your baby will need a pediatric visit within 2-5 days of hospital discharge. After that: 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, and so on. Knowing this schedule in advance helps you plan ahead — especially if you have other children, work commitments, or limited childcare support.

Step 4: Ask About Newborn Hospital Care

If your practice has providers with hospital privileges at your delivery hospital, your baby’s pediatrician may examine them before you’re even discharged. This provides important continuity and is worth confirming during your prenatal visit.

We’d love to meet you. Schedule your prenatal consultation at nvpeds.com or call (702) 457-5437.
