Sports and School Physicals in Henderson & Las Vegas, NV

School and sports physicals in Las Vegas are an efficient way to assess a child’s health. In fact, sports physicals are required at many schools before a child can be cleared to participate in sports.

Nevada Pediatric Specialists can perform a sports physical so you can not only assess your child’s well-being but also ensure that they are fit to participate in sports.

What Is a Sports Physical?

In the sports medicine field, a sports physical exam is known as a pre-participation physical examination or PPE. This exam is designed to determine whether or not it is safe for a child to participate in a sport by assessing their health.

Even if your child is not planning to go into sports, school physicals can be a great way to determine whether or not your child has developed any ongoing conditions. If they have, our pediatricians will be able to recommend a treatment plan.

What Can Be Expected During a Sports Physical?

A sports physical is split into two parts.

First, the pediatrician will go over your child’s medical history. This part will include questions about:

  • Serious illness among family members
  • Illnesses your child may have had when they were younger, such as asthma
  • Previous hospitalizations/surgeries
  • Past injuries
  • Allergies
  • Any medications that your child is currently taking

Your student will be asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding these subjects. It is very important that all questions be answered thoroughly and honestly.

Next, the pediatrician will perform a physical exam for your child. This portion is designed to:

  • Record height and weight
  • Measure blood pressure and pulse
  • Test your child’s vision
  • Evaluate posture, joints, strength, and flexibility
  • Examine heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat

If your child has started or has already gone through puberty, the pediatrician may ask additional questions. For example, if a girl is wanting to be active in sports, the pediatrician may inquire about her period and her diet.

How Often Should School/Sports Physicals Be Performed?

Sports physicals in Las Vegas are recommended to be performed 6 to 8 weeks before the start of the season. This gives ample time for recovery should an ongoing condition be discovered during the physical.

If your child is not planning on participating in sports, it is recommended that they receive a physical annually if they have an ongoing condition or once every two years if they don’t.
